Preparation for Bone Densitometry (DEXA Scan)
Do not take calcium supplements within 24 hours prior to the exam.
If you have recently undergone a contrast X-ray with barium swallow, you must wait at least 7 days before having a bone densitometry test.
Before the bone density test, you will be asked to complete a related form. Then, you will be provided with disposable clothing to wear. After that, your height and weight will be measured.
The technician will then assist you in lying down on the bone densitometry table.
Typically, the bone density scan is performed on your spine and hip, and you will be asked to remain still during the scan.
The entire procedure usually takes about 20 minutes.
